A Class 10 girl student, who was allegedly set ablaze by a youth following repeated harassment, succumbed to her burn injuries on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Patna, police said.
The shocking incident took place on January 17 at Beria village under the Gopalpur police station limits in Patna district. The girl was returning home from her grandmother’s house when the accused allegedly attacked her.
Alleged harassment led to brutal attack
According to police and the victim’s family, the accused, identified as Aditya (22), a resident of Bairiya village, had been harassing the minor regularly, asking her to speak to him and befriend him. The family alleged that the girl had repeatedly protested against his behaviour.
On the day of the incident, when the girl once again refused his advances, an argument reportedly broke out. The accused allegedly threatened to burn her by pouring petrol. When the girl dared him, he allegedly carried out the threat, dousing her with petrol and setting her on fire.
The victim sustained severe burn injuries and collapsed on the spot.
Succumbs during treatment
The injured student was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Patna, where she battled for life for several days before succumbing to her injuries on Friday. Based on her statement recorded earlier, police have registered a First Information Report in the case.
Sadar SDPO-2 Ranjan Kumar said an investigation is underway and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused, who is currently absconding.
Police probe continues
Gopalpur police station in-charge Amit Kumar said the girl had earlier been living with her maternal grandparents in Bairia village and had later shifted to a rented house nearby with her family. Police said they are examining all angles, including previous complaints, if any, related to harassment.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the safety of minor girls and the need for strict action against harassment and gender-based violence.
