A 17-year-old Class 11 student, who was brutally assaulted by a group of teenagers in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area, succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday, police officials said. Six juveniles have been apprehended in connection with the case.
The victim, identified as Mohit, son of Gyan Singh and a resident of Indra Camp, Trilokpuri, was grievously injured during the assault on the evening of January 5.
Assault following local dispute
According to the police, a call was received at around 7.25 pm on January 5 from Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital regarding an unconscious teenage boy who had been brought in following a physical assault. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, Mohit was referred to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for advanced treatment.
Doctors at GTB Hospital declared him unfit to give a statement owing to his critical condition.
During the preliminary investigation, an eyewitness told the police that Mohit had an ongoing dispute with one of the juveniles from the same locality. On the evening of the incident, while Mohit was with his friends in Trilokpuri, a verbal argument reportedly broke out with a group of minors.
Brutal attack by group
The altercation soon escalated into violence. The eyewitness stated that Mohit was surrounded by several juveniles and was repeatedly beaten and kicked. Even after he fell to the ground, the assault allegedly continued. Another youth who tried to intervene was also attacked by the group.
As a result of the sustained beating, Mohit lost consciousness at the spot. At around 1.15 am on January 6, GTB Hospital informed the police that he had succumbed to his injuries.
Case registered, investigation underway
Following his death, FIR No. 09/26 was registered at Police Station Mayur Vihar under Sections 103(1), 115(2), 126(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case has been converted to murder.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhaniya said that the crime team and officials from the Forensic Science Laboratory inspected the scene and collected evidence. Based on investigations so far, all six juveniles involved have been apprehended. The post-mortem examination has been conducted, and the final medical opinion on the cause of death is awaited.
Family seeks justice
Speaking to reporters, Mohit’s grandmother said the family was devastated and demanded justice. “A few people called him, took him away and brutally beat him. My grandson will not return, but I want justice,” she said, adding that Mohit had mentioned before his death that several people had assaulted him.
The incident has triggered fear and concern among local residents, who say violence involving minors has been rising in the area. Police have assured that the case will be pursued strictly in accordance with the law.
