A disturbing incident unfolded at the Chengunam Kollaimedu Panchayat Union Primary School in Polur, Tiruvannamalai, where a Class 5 student was allegedly struck on the shoulder with a broomstick by the school’s noon-meal cook. His offense? Pointing out the poor quality of the egg served to him.
The cook, Lakshmi, and her assistant Muniyammal have both been suspended following the incident. Authorities confirmed that the schoolteacher who witnessed the assault has been recommended for transfer.
Sources say the child had raised a concern on Wednesday about the quality of food. Lakshmi reportedly promised better eggs the next day, but the exchange turned into a verbal dispute, during which she, allegedly with help from Muniyammal, hit the student. An investigation confirmed the boy did not suffer physical injuries.
Lakshmi later claimed the student regularly misbehaved and spoke disrespectfully to her. Officials stated no prior complaints had been made against her.
Adding a twist, teacher Flora allegedly allowed students to use her phone to record the incident. Sources indicated pre-existing tensions between Flora and Lakshmi, which may have influenced the situation. The video surfaced online on Friday, quickly going viral and prompting swift action from authorities.
A case has been registered against Lakshmi and Muniyammal under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. Police are continuing their investigation.
