A tragic incident unfolded at the Government High School in Kondapuram village near RK Pet in Tiruvallur district on Tuesday, where a 12-year-old student died on the spot after a dilapidated wall collapsed inside the school premises.
The deceased has been identified as S Mohith, a Class 7 student. Police said the incident occurred during lunch break, shortly after the completion of the half-yearly examinations. Mohith was reportedly sitting atop an old wall adjacent to a ramp within the school campus when the structure suddenly gave way.
Wall collapses during lunch break
According to the RK Pet police, the boy was having lunch when the weakened wall collapsed without warning, trapping him under the debris. He sustained fatal injuries and died instantly. No other students were injured in the incident.
School sources said the wall was already in a dilapidated condition, and recent rainfall had further weakened the structure, raising serious questions about maintenance and safety oversight.
Chief Minister announces relief
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family. In an official statement, he announced a solatium of ₹3 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
Officials also confirmed that ₹8 lakh had earlier been sanctioned for repair works at the school.
Protest by family, assurances by officials
Following Mohith’s death, family members and relatives staged a protest for nearly three hours, demanding action against the school authorities and initially refusing to allow the body to be taken for post-mortem examination.
After talks with police and revenue officials, including DSP (in-charge) Kandan and Tahsildar (in-charge) Saraswathi, the family relented. The body was later shifted to Tiruttani Government Hospital for post-mortem.
A police case has been registered in connection with the incident.
Education department seeks explanations
Officials from the School Education Department said explanations have been sought from the headmaster and concerned teachers. “Further action will be taken based on their response and directions from the Director of School Education,” an official said.
Sources noted that while schools receive annual circulars before the monsoon outlining safety precautions, there is no effective monitoring mechanism to ensure implementation.
Political reactions intensify
Opposition parties strongly condemned the incident. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami blamed the DMK government for poor maintenance of government school infrastructure.
“Had the government spent money on maintaining schools instead of publicity, this tragic loss could have been prevented,” he alleged.
The incident has reignited concerns over student safety and infrastructure neglect in government schools.
