Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay made a touching gesture on Wednesday by stepping off the stage to personally hand over an appointment order to a woman in her 40th week of pregnancy during a government recruitment event in Chennai.

The event, organised by the Energy Department at Kalaivanar Arangam, saw the Chief Minister distribute appointment orders to 401 newly recruited candidates. Among them were 383 Assistant Engineers (Electrical) selected through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) and 18 Assistant Accounts Officers appointed to the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited.

Heartwarming moment wins praise

The highlight of the ceremony came when Vijay noticed recruit R Akshayalakshmi, who was in the final stage of her pregnancy. Instead of asking her to come onto the stage, the Chief Minister walked down and personally handed over her appointment order, earning appreciation from those present.

The gesture quickly drew attention, with many praising the Chief Minister’s thoughtfulness and concern for the expectant mother.

Government to fill 15,000 vacancies

The appointments come amid the Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to strengthen the state’s power sector. During a recent review meeting, officials informed the Chief Minister that the Electricity Board was facing a shortage of more than 70,000 employees across various positions.

In response, Vijay directed officials to initiate recruitment for at least 15,000 posts within a year to improve operational efficiency, create employment opportunities for young people and ensure uninterrupted power supply across the state.

According to an official statement, the latest appointments reflect the government’s commitment to transparent recruitment and enhancing the functioning of the Energy Department.
