Thane: The canteen at the civic-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa has been closed after a patient allegedly found a cockroach in his meal, prompting an inspection by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA found several violations of food safety norms during its inspection, following which canteen services were suspended.
Patient’s complaint triggers action
The incident came to light on August 28 when a patient undergoing eye surgery complained that he had found a cockroach in his dinner plate.
The complaint led members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to protest at the hospital Dean’s office, raising concerns over food safety and alleged negligence.
Following the protest, FDA officials inspected the hospital kitchen and identified multiple violations of food safety regulations.
Canteen to remain closed until clearance
Hospital Dean Dr Swapnali Kadam said the canteen would remain closed until a complete inspection was carried out and the FDA granted permission for it to reopen.
The FDA has also initiated action against Ram Caterers, the contractor responsible for operating the canteen.
Dr Kadam said the contractor would not be permitted to resume services without formal clearance from the FDA.
Patients given alternative food arrangements
With the canteen services suspended, the hospital has made alternative arrangements to provide meals to patients, according to the Dean.
