In a city with limited open recreational spaces, Semmozhi Park is shaping up to be a transformative addition. Spread across 45 acres on the site of the former central prison in Gandhipuram, the park is expected to open on August 15, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin likely to inaugurate it — provided final works stay on track.

Originally announced in 2010 by late CM M. Karunanidhi, the project gained fresh momentum after Stalin laid its foundation in December 2023. According to officials, 85% of the work is complete, and the project is progressing swiftly.

Key attractions include a giant Ferris wheel, a zipline adventure zone, and a realistic rainforest trail featuring native flora. Both the Ferris wheel and zipline will be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.

Beyond adventure, the park blends culture and ecology:

  • A botanical garden showcasing 219 endangered species from Sangam literature

  • A herbal garden with 2,500 traditional Tamil Nadu medicinal plants

  • Terracotta murals by the same artist who worked on the Semmozhi Poonga in Chennai

  • Convention centre, selfie spots, open-air gym, and more

    • Delays from the original June deadline were caused by design changes to accommodate these added attractions. City Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran confirmed that essential infrastructure, including the pipeline connecting the Ukkadam STP, is now in place, and quality checks are ongoing.

    Once complete, Semmozhi Park aims to be a flagship destination, combining nature, art, and adventure in the heart of Coimbatore.
