New Delhi: Ajay Maken, Congress Delhi chief, has resigned from his post due to health issues. He was reported to have resigned last week but the Congress party has denied these reports.

A close aide of Maken has said that he had sent his resignation last week to Rahul Gandhi’s office, but it was not accepted. According to the aide, Maken has been unwell and is undergoing treatment. P C Chacko, Congress Delhi in-charge, however, has said that he had seen the news reports about the resignation but clarified that no such letter was received by the Congress president and that Maken has simply gone abroad for a check-up.

54-year-old Maken has had a long and successful political and electoral career which began at the age of 21 when he was elected president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). He was then a three-time member of the Delhi assembly, two-time member of Parliament and a former Union Minister. Maken was then made the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee in 2015, prior to the state polls. His resignation comes as a blow to the party, who are gearing up for the upcoming 2019 general elections.
