Chandigarh: The Punjab Congress plunged into fresh turmoil on Monday after the party’s state unit suspended former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu with immediate effect, a day after she alleged that those aspiring to become Chief Minister in the party must bring a “suitcase of Rs 500 crore”. The suspension order, issued without citing any reason, has intensified an already charged political atmosphere in the state.

The development follows her Sunday statement suggesting that her husband, former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, would return to active politics only if he is declared the party’s chief ministerial face. Her comments have triggered political backlash, renewed internal rivalry and provided fresh ammunition to rival parties.

Suspension stirs controversy in Punjab Congress

Speaking to reporters after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday, Navjot Kaur Sidhu claimed that “money power” influences major political appointments within the Congress.

“We do not have Rs 500 crore to give to sit in the chief minister’s chair,” she said, adding that although nobody had directly asked them for money, “the one who gives a suitcase of Rs 500 crore becomes the CM”.

Her remarks implied that top leadership pitches are allegedly influenced by massive financial transactions — a claim that has shaken the Punjab Congress establishment. Party leaders maintained silence, but the state unit swiftly issued her suspension letter on Monday, avoiding any detailed explanation.

The suspension has exposed a widening chasm within the Punjab Congress, which has been dealing with internal factionalism for several years. According to her, at least five senior leaders in the party harbour chief ministerial ambitions and would prevent anyone — including her husband — from being projected as the face of the party.

Sidhus’ political equation at forefront

The controversy has revived discussion around Navjot Singh Sidhu’s political future. Sidhu, once seen as a potential CM face of Punjab Congress, has been largely inactive over the past year. He skipped campaigning in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, returned to IPL commentary, and recently started his own YouTube channel.

Navjot Kaur Sidhu insisted, however, that the former cricketer remains willing to return to the political arena if the party announces him as its chief ministerial candidate. Otherwise, she said, he is “happy” earning well outside politics.

Her comments are being viewed as both a defence of her husband and a critique of the party’s internal functioning. Congress insiders have expressed concern that her statements — and now the suspension — may further destabilise the party ahead of upcoming electoral seasons.

BJP seizes opportunity, calls it proof of corruption

The Bharatiya Janata Party immediately leveraged the controversy, calling Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s remark a public confirmation of what it claims is “institutionalised corruption” within the Congress.

“She has said anybody can think of becoming CM only if he has Rs 500 crore in his suitcase. Congress has been totally engulfed in corrupt practices,” BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged.

Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar also reacted strongly, claiming that the allegation aligns with what he described as the Congress’ decades-long culture of transactional politics. He went on to assert that he had heard about a former Congress chief minister allegedly paying Rs 350 crore to secure the top post.

Jakhar then expanded his attack to the ruling AAP government, accusing the Punjab Police of behaving like “uniformed gangsters” and highlighting what he said is a total collapse of law and order. He also claimed that some senior police officers are involved in extortion and corruption.

Appealing to voters, Jakhar urged Punjabis to “give BJP one chance”, asserting that the state urgently needs accountability and strong governance.

AAP maintains silence as political temperature rises

The Aam Aadmi Party, currently in power in Punjab, has maintained relative silence on the controversy so far. Political observers believe AAP may be waiting for further developments before weighing in, given that the issue primarily weakens Congress while also offering BJP a chance to expand its narrative.

However, the ripple effect of the suspension and the allegations is expected to influence political equations in the coming weeks, especially as parties begin preparations for key future elections.

Congress faces renewed internal turbulence

The Congress in Punjab has faced leadership issues and internal disagreements since its defeat in the 2022 Assembly elections. While the party has attempted to bring organisational stability, Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s explosive claim has reignited debates over leadership battles and ideological cohesion.

Her suspension, although immediate and sharp, leaves several questions unanswered:

  • Will the party initiate disciplinary action or attempt reconciliation?
  • Will Navjot Singh Sidhu distance himself from his wife’s statements or take a stand?
  • How will Congress handle internal demands for clarity on leadership roles and future strategy?

Conclusion

The sudden suspension of Navjot Kaur Sidhu marks yet another episode of internal unrest for the Punjab Congress. Her “Rs 500 crore CM” allegation has opened the door to political attacks from rivals, revived factional tensions within the party, and placed new focus on Navjot Singh Sidhu’s political trajectory. With opposition parties sharpening their criticism and Congress refraining from clarification, the controversy is poised to intensify Punjab’s political landscape in the coming days.
