Uttar Pradesh ATS has uncovered a massive religious conversion racket led by a self-proclaimed spiritual leader, Jalaluddin, also known as Chhangur Baba. Over the past three years, he allegedly financed over 1,000 Muslim men to entrap Hindu women, especially targeting widows, the poor, and those in vulnerable conditions, with the intent of converting them.
Investigators claim that Chhangur Baba received around ₹500 crore from foreign nations, largely from Islamic countries, to run this covert operation. Funds were allegedly distributed to seven districts across the state, using channels near the Indo-Nepal border. These men were reportedly paid to develop romantic relationships with Hindu girls, often referred to as cases of ‘love jihad’.
The ATS has also arrested Neetu, alias Nasreen, who is believed to have handled international transactions and managed the financial logistics. She, along with Chhangur Baba, has been remanded to ATS custody for seven days. Agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and National Investigation Agency (NIA) are also stepping in to trace the international money trail.
Earlier, Naveen (alias Jamaluddin) and Mehboob, Chhangur’s son, were also apprehended and are currently in Lucknow jail. Investigations revealed heavy financial activities through the bank accounts of Baba and his associates.
Authorities suspect the existence of foreign accounts in places like Sharjah, Dubai, or other parts of the UAE. Additionally, a ₹5 crore illegally built mansion belonging to Chhangur Baba in Balrampur was demolished recently. The 40-room palatial home sat on encroached government land.
