One of the survivors of the tragic Indrayani River bridge collapse in Pune’s Talegaon area recalled that a heavy crowd had gathered at the centre of the bridge, causing it to cave in. “People were stuck from both sides, and those standing in the middle were swept away,” he said. Survivors reportedly fell on the rocks below, suffering injuries.
The incident took place at around 3:15 pm on Sunday. Rescue efforts began within 15 minutes, and by Monday, officials confirmed 4 deaths and 51 injuries. The deceased included Chandrakant Salve, Rohit Mane, Vihaan Mane, and an unidentified male. Maval Tehsildar Vikram Deshmukh confirmed no missing person complaints had been received yet, though two people are still believed to be unaccounted for.
District Collector Jitendra Dudi said 38 people had been rescued so far, with a massive rescue team of 250 personnel deployed. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief and confirmed that NDRF teams were on site. He is closely coordinating with all senior officials.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while on an international visit, also spoke to CM Fadnavis to assess the situation. Relief operations remain in full swing, with all relevant agencies on high alert.
