Mysuru: The CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) has stepped up to support landslide survivors and rescuers in Wayanad, Kerala, by dispatching a range of nutritionally rich food products to relief camps. This initiative follows the devastating landslides triggered by heavy rains on July 30, 2024, which affected multiple villages in the region.
Responding to requests for long-shelf-life foods that boost immunity, CSIR-CFTRI has sent a variety of items including Nutra Spirulina Chikki, Fortified Mango Bar, high-protein Burfi for children, Gluten-free Ragi biscuits, Ragi Beverage Mix, Millet Upma Mix, Kokum fruit bar, Amla and Tamarind candies, High-protein rusks, Sambar mix, Instant sambar powder, and infant food formulas for babies aged 6 to 10 months. These products, developed using CFTRI’s advanced technologies, are fortified with proteins, vitamins, and minerals to combat malnutrition and enhance immunity.
Special attention was given to infant nutrition, a critical concern during such emergencies. Additionally, herbal hand sanitizers, also developed by CSIR-CFTRI, were included in the aid.
Under the leadership of Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director of CSIR-CFTRI, the relief items were sent in three batches on August 3, 5, and 7. They were handed over to Anita Kumari, Sub Collector of Wayanad, and delivered to the collection centers by CFTRI staff.
This contribution reflects CSIR-CFTRI’s ongoing commitment to disaster relief and its expertise in food science and technology. In previous disasters, the institute has also provided hand sanitizers and wet wipes through collaborations with M/s Scheveran Laboratories Pvt Ltd.
The landslides have displaced over 9,300 people, who are currently housed in 91 relief camps as reported by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
