A tragic accident in Kalyan claimed the life of a 42-year-old man after a speeding car allegedly driven by a juvenile rammed into his bicycle on an under-construction stretch of road.
Fatal crash on restricted stretch
The deceased, Shrinivas Tandle, was a well-known figure in the local business community and associated with one of the city’s oldest cloth stores.
According to police, the accident occurred on a portion of the under-construction Kalyan Ring Road, which runs parallel to the Ulhas River and had not been officially opened to traffic.
The impact was severe, with Tandle reportedly thrown several metres into the air, leading to his death on the spot.
Newly purchased cycle, tragic end
Family members said Tandle had recently purchased a bicycle as part of an effort to improve his fitness. He had gone out for a ride just a day after buying it.
His brother stated that the stretch has become notorious for reckless driving and stunt riding, despite being barricaded.
Juvenile driver absconding
Police confirmed that the vehicle involved has been traced and that the driver is a minor. A case has been registered, and authorities are investigating the role of the boy’s parents.
The accused is currently absconding, officials said.
Questions over safety and access
The incident has raised serious concerns about safety lapses and access control on incomplete infrastructure projects. Residents have questioned how vehicles were able to enter a road that was meant to remain closed.
Experts and cycling groups have also pointed to the growing risks faced by cyclists amid rapid urbanisation and increasing traffic without adequate infrastructure.
