A fresh debate has broken out on social media over the role of the Indian Army in high-altitude civilian rescue operations in Ladakh, after a viral video showed a popular YouTuber being rescued near Umling La Pass, one of the world’s highest motorable roads.
The discussion was triggered by a post on X by Rattan Dhillon, who questioned whether repeated rescue missions for civilians and content creators were diverting the Army from its core responsibilities in a strategically sensitive border region.
Social media post sparks controversy
In his post, Dhillon argued that the Army in Ladakh is “increasingly being harassed” by rescue operations instead of focusing on its primary duties. Referring to the recent incident, he said a well-known YouTuber with “no real driving skills or high-altitude experience” had to be rescued after encountering black ice near Umling La.
“This raises a serious question: why are such YouTubers even granted permission to travel to extremely risky passes like this, especially during dangerous seasons?” Dhillon asked, calling for stricter controls on civilian access during high-risk periods.
Allegations against content creators
The debate intensified after other users joined the discussion, with some alleging that the YouTuber involved, identified online as ajju008, engaged in risky driving behaviour to generate views.
One user claimed that similar videos showed the influencer performing dangerous manoeuvres on icy roads. Others criticised what they described as a trend of influencers risking lives and public resources for online reach.
“Social media demands extreme content. Some influencers will do anything for views and money,” one user commented, while another argued that in many countries such behaviour would attract heavy fines for wasting public resources.
Strategic and safety concerns
Umling La, located at an altitude of over 19,000 feet, lies close to India’s border with China and is considered strategically sensitive. The region is known for thin oxygen levels, sudden weather changes and hazardous road conditions, including stretches of black ice.
Defence experts have long maintained that while the Army’s rescue efforts reflect professionalism and humanitarian commitment, avoidable civilian emergencies place additional strain on personnel operating in already extreme conditions.
Call for tighter regulation
The incident has renewed calls for stricter permission protocols, seasonal travel bans and better enforcement of safety guidelines for tourists and content creators in high-altitude areas.
While no official response has yet been issued by authorities, the debate highlights a growing tension between adventure tourism, influencer culture and national security considerations in India’s border regions.
