In a deeply distressing incident in Shahapur, Belagavi, three members of a single family died by suicide after allegedly ingesting a toxic substance at their rental residence in Joshi Galli on Wednesday. A fourth family member, who also consumed the poison, is battling for her life in the hospital.

Preliminary reports suggest the family may have resorted to this extreme step due to overwhelming financial burdens. According to sources, Santosh (aged 45), a goldsmith by profession, was unable to clear his mounting debts. It’s believed that the pressure of his financial situation had driven him into isolation for several months before he recently returned home.

Santosh, who remained unmarried, lived with his aged mother and two unmarried sisters. On the day of the tragedy, all four reportedly consumed the poisonous substance together. Tragically, Santosh, his mother Suvarna, and one of his sisters, Mangal, did not survive. The second sister, whose name has not been disclosed, is undergoing treatment and remains in critical condition.

Local police from Shahapur station have initiated an investigation into the incident and are examining the circumstances that led to the grim decision. Authorities are also speaking to neighbours and relatives to uncover any further details.

The incident has left the locality in shock, highlighting the devastating toll of financial distress and mental health struggles. Support systems for debt-ridden families remain a pressing concern.
