Uttarakhand Police have registered a first information report (FIR) against Amit Sehgal in connection with the death of journalist Pankaj Mishra, who died hours after allegedly being assaulted inside his home in Dehradun.

According to details shared by news agency ANI, the incident occurred on the night of December 15 at Mishra’s residence in Doon Vihar, Jakhan. The FIR has been filed based on a complaint lodged by the journalist’s brother.

Brutal attack alleged

The complaint states that around 10 pm, Amit Sehgal, along with several unidentified associates, forcibly entered Mishra’s house and launched a violent assault. The accused allegedly abused the journalist and attacked him with punches and kicks, repeatedly targeting his chest and abdomen.

The complainant has alleged that the assault was carried out with the intention to kill. During the attack, Mishra reportedly began bleeding from the mouth, indicating the severity of the injuries.

Before leaving the premises, Sehgal is also accused of taking away the mobile phones belonging to Mishra and his wife, according to the FIR.

Victim collapses hours later

Police said that later in the night, Mishra complained of severe chest pain. Around 3 am on December 16, his condition worsened and he collapsed at home.

He was immediately rushed to Doon Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after post-mortem examination and medical reports, police said.

Case registered under new criminal law

Rajpur police have registered a case under Sections 103, 304, 333 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. These sections relate to offences including culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt and assault.

An investigation has been launched to trace the other accused involved in the incident and to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the journalist’s death.

Probe underway, arrests awaited

Police officials said teams are actively searching for the accused and collecting evidence, including statements from witnesses and forensic material from the scene. The role of each person involved will be examined as part of the probe.
