Six people, including women and children, were injured after they jumped from a building in panic when a fire broke out at an adjoining factory in northwest Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar on Sunday. Police said all the injured are out of danger.
Fire triggers panic among residents
The fire broke out on the ground and first floors of a godown-cum-factory that manufactures judo dresses and boxing gloves. Police said nobody was inside the factory when the blaze started.
However, residents of the adjoining building were caught in panic as the fire spread. Six people, including children, reportedly escaped by jumping from the building and suffered injuries in the process.
Children among those who jumped
A video circulating on social media reportedly shows two children climbing through a small window and jumping into an empty plot below. People gathered on the ground attempted to cushion their fall using bedsheets and mattresses.
The footage also shows a woman preparing to jump, while people below rushed to arrange more mattresses and bedsheets to reduce the impact of the fall.
Firefighters bring blaze under control
The Delhi Fire Services received the emergency call at 11.05 am and deployed 15 fire tenders to the location. Firefighters launched an immediate operation and brought the blaze under control, police said.
The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment and are reported to be out of danger.
Police are continuing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the fire and assess the extent of damage. Authorities are also verifying the identities and details of those injured.
