The Delhi government has made a formal request to the Supreme Court seeking additional water supply from neighboring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh to alleviate the severe water shortage gripping the national capital for a month.

Numerous areas across Delhi, such as Chanakyapuri’s Sanjay Camp and the Geeta Colony, are grappling with acute water scarcity. Amid scorching temperatures, residents endure lengthy queues in the hopes of filling even a single bucket, as tanker services struggle to adequately meet the needs of densely populated colonies.

This water crisis coincides with the national capital experiencing near-record high temperatures, with the mercury inching towards the 50-degree Celsius mark while the minimum temperature hovers around 30 degrees Celsius, 2.8 degrees above the seasonal norm.

According to meteorological forecasts, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi for the foreseeable future, prompting advisories for people to minimize exposure to the heat and ensure proper hydration.

In response to the crisis, the AAP-led Delhi government has implemented a fine of ₹2,000 for water wastage and mobilized 200 teams to enforce this penalty effectively.
