Delhi: On August 13, 2024, the Delhi Metro achieved a new ridership milestone with 72.38 lakh passenger journeys, marking the highest daily ridership ever recorded. This follows a recent trend of high ridership, with the previous day’s figure at 71.07 lakh, the third-highest on record.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) highlighted that this peak in passenger journeys surpasses the previous record of 71.09 lakh set on February 3, 2024. The network, spanning 392.44 km and 288 stations, has expanded beyond Delhi to neighboring areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh, and Ballabhgarh.

In 2023, the Delhi Metro surpassed 200 crore passenger journeys for the first time, with a total of 2,032,342,972 trips. This represents a significant increase from 2022’s 149 crore journeys and 2019’s 185 crore.

The top five highest ridership days have all been recorded this year, demonstrating the growing reliance on the metro service. Notably, the recent high ridership figures reflect a robust demand for the metro system, driven by its extensive network and operational efficiency.

Finance Minister Atishi’s budget announcement for 2024-25 included an allocation of ₹500 crore for the Delhi Metro, underscoring its importance in daily commuting. The network’s expansion over the past nine years, doubling in length and increasing in stations, highlights its critical role in urban transportation.
