A directive asking heads of Delhi government schools and teachers to visit the homes of Class 10 toppers has drawn concerns from a section of teachers, who said the programme coincided with examinations and added to their existing workload.
Teachers say timing adds to exam pressure
Under the ‘Aashirvaad Ka Diya’ programme, school heads accompanied by two teachers were instructed to visit the homes of Class 10 toppers between 6 pm and 7 pm on September 17, light a lamp and convey best wishes on behalf of the Directorate of Education.
Schools were also asked to record photographs and videos of the visits and upload them to a designated Google Drive. Cluster in-charges were directed to compile the material within a specified deadline.
The Directorate of Education subsequently shared images and posts from the visits, describing the programme as an opportunity for principals and teachers to celebrate the achievements of Class 10 toppers and their families.
Examination duties add to teachers’ workload
Teachers, however, said the timing of the programme was difficult because schools are currently engaged in examination-related responsibilities, including invigilation, evaluation and administrative work.
Some teachers also raised concerns about the additional documentation and monitoring requirements associated with the programme. They said completing the assigned activities alongside examination duties increased pressure during an already demanding period.
The issue has highlighted the practical challenges teachers face when additional school activities are scheduled alongside examinations, with educators seeking sufficient time to balance ceremonial programmes and their core academic responsibilities.
