Delhi Zoo authorities have announced their intention to install additional CCTV cameras in animal enclosures after a recent altercation between two male chinkaras resulted in the death of one. The incident occurred on June 1 when the two males engaged in a fierce fight.
Sanjeet Kumar, Director of Delhi Zoo, noted that such confrontations among animals, aimed at asserting dominance, are not uncommon, whether in the wild or captivity. Unfortunately, in this case, one of the chinkaras sustained severe injuries, including an intestinal injury, and despite immediate medical attention, did not survive.
The surviving chinkara, which suffered minor injuries, has been relocated to an enclosure housing other animals, including a newborn.
In response to this incident, the zoo is implementing several measures to enhance animal safety and monitoring. Kumar explained, “We are planning to increase the number of CCTV cameras and expand their coverage in animal areas. This will enable quicker response during emergencies.” He also emphasized efforts to improve response times using advanced technology and efficient manpower.
Kumar acknowledged, “While we cannot alter their natural behavior, we aim to mitigate the escalation of such incidents. Regrettably, such fights can sometimes lead to grave consequences.”
Currently, the Delhi Zoo houses eight chinkaras, including three males. Authorities have underscored their ongoing concern about diseases that pose a threat to entire species.
