New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, commenced his tenure in Tihar Jail with a symbolic gesture, picking up the broom – the symbol of his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – and sweeping the floor of his cell and the surrounding area on Tuesday morning, as per a jail source. Despite being described as “slightly uncomfortable” by prison officials during his first night, Kejriwal adhered to his regular routine even within the confines of jail.

Kejriwal, opting for home-cooked food as per court orders along with his prescribed medications, refrained from consuming the standard jail fare. He engaged in yoga early in the morning and partook in the jail-provided breakfast of bread and tea. Throughout the day, he could be seen strolling in his cell or engrossed in reading. Precautionary measures were heightened as intelligence inputs suggested potential threats from fellow inmates seeking notoriety.

Utilizing minimal personal belongings, Kejriwal utilized only one shawl from home for bedding, relying on jail-issued materials for the rest. He underwent routine medical check-ups, with his vital parameters reported as normal. Interactions included video conferences with his wife and other family members, as well as consultations with legal counsel, during which he attended to administrative matters.

Situated in Tihar’s Jail No. 2, a facility with a complex history, Kejriwal occupies the general ward alongside individuals facing charges ranging from theft to domestic violence. The prison also houses high-security wards for notorious criminals and militants, ensuring stringent security measures. Notable inmates include terrorist Zia Ur Rehman, among others.

Kejriwal’s two-week confinement follows a court decision in connection with a case concerning Delhi’s excise policy of 2021-22. As the Chief Minister adjusts to his temporary residence in Tihar Jail, his activities continue to be closely monitored.
