In a significant development just weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, renowned boxer Vijender Singh has announced his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move comes as another setback for the Congress, as Singh had previously been associated with the party since 2019.
Singh’s decision to join the BJP follows his unsuccessful stint with the Congress, during which he contested the general elections from the South Delhi constituency but lost to BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri. Sources indicate that the Congress had plans to field Singh against BJP MP Hema Malini from the Mathura seat, aiming to leverage his popularity to secure votes from the Jat community, particularly in Haryana and Western UP. However, Singh’s shift to the BJP is expected to bolster the ruling party’s campaign in these regions.
A celebrated Olympian, Vijender Singh holds the distinction of being the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, securing a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His illustrious career also includes silver and bronze medals at various Commonwealth Games and World Championships.
Joining the BJP in the presence of party General Secretary Vinod Tawde, Singh expressed his sentiments, likening the move to a “ghar wapsi” (homecoming). He lauded the respect accorded to sportspersons under the BJP-led government and voiced his eagerness to contribute to the welfare of the people. Singh emphasized his commitment to upholding honesty and integrity, asserting that he remains the same principled individual despite his political affiliations.
Singh’s transition to the BJP marks a significant shift in political alliances and is poised to impact the dynamics of the upcoming elections.
