New Delhi: Following the death of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, allegedly due to cardiac arrest, the Uttar Pradesh police have increased security in several towns in the state.

The gangster was lodged at Banda jail, and he fell unconscious on Thursday night. He was immediately taken to Rani Durgavati Medical College and Hospital, but he did not respond to treatment. His family members’ allege that he was poisoned. Ansari has been in jail since 2005.

Following his demise, prohibitory orders were clamped in many towns in the state, banning large gatherings. In addition, additional police forces, including Central Reserve Police Force units, were deployed in Mau, Banda, Ghazipur, and Varanasi districts.

The police are on high alert; their social media cell is tracking unlawful elements that may try to spark a riot.

Doctors said that the gangster turned politician died due to cardiac arrest, but his son and his brother suspect poisoning while in jail, and they demanded a probe into his death.

A panel of five doctors will perform the autopsy on Ansari today. Security has been tightened outside the Banda hospital, where the gangster died. A large crowd had already gathered outside the former BSP MLA’s house in Ghazipur.

Ansari hails from Mau, and it is said that he has strong influence in the adjoining Ghazipur and Varnasi districts as well.

His son Umar Ansari, speaking to the media, raised questions; he alleged that he was not allowed to meet his father when he visited the jail two days ago. He was not given proper treatment. He was unwell, and despite that, he was sent back to jail. If his stomach was bloated, then how could there be a heart attack? He questioned.

In the video that gained traction on social media, one can see that his stomach was bloated and his condition was serious. He was admitted to the ICU. But after just 12–14 hours, he was again sent back to jail, his son said.

Ansari was a five-time MLA from the Mau Sardar constituency and has 60 criminal cases pending against him. He has been sentenced in as many as eight cases since 2022 by different courts in UP, and since then he has been lodged in Banda jail.
