New Delhi: A government-appointed panel comprising four members has been tasked with investigating the tragic school bus collision that resulted in the loss of six students’ lives and left approximately 20 others injured in Mahendragarh, Haryana, on Thursday. The accident occurred near Unhani village in Kanina as the bus, carrying around 40 students from primary to secondary classes to the GL Public School, collided with a tree and overturned, as per police reports. An FIR has been filed in connection with the incident.

In response to this alarming event, the Haryana Education Department has convened a meeting today at 3 pm to discuss the implementation of a vehicle safety policy. The meeting will be attended by all District Education Officers, Elementary Education Officers, and Block Education Officers from across the state via video conferencing.

Preliminary investigations have revealed distressing details about the events leading up to the crash, with school bags, shoes, and study materials strewn amidst the wreckage. Some children were found injured and in pools of blood, while others were crying out in pain.

According to authorities, the driver, identified as Dharmender, was allegedly intoxicated and driving recklessly at the time of the accident. Despite attempts by concerned villagers to stop the bus, it continued on its path, culminating in the tragic collision.

Following the incident, three individuals, including the school’s principal and another school official, have been taken into custody.

Various leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed profound sorrow and emphasized the need for urgent measures to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.

This incident has also brought attention to serious concerns regarding the safety standards of school transportation. Police have highlighted that the school bus lacked essential documentation and had previously faced fines for non-compliance.
