What began as a journey to build a better future for his family ended in tragedy for 28-year-old Swiggy delivery partner Niyaz Ali, who was killed in a devastating road accident involving a BEST electric bus in Mumbai.

Originally from Badhaipurva village in Uttar Pradesh’s Shravasti district, Niyaz had moved to Mumbai several years ago in search of work. Determined to support his ageing parents and younger sister, he took up various jobs before eventually becoming a delivery partner with Swiggy.

A life built on sacrifice

Family members said Niyaz worked tirelessly and lived modestly with a cousin in Mumbai’s Null Bazaar area. His primary goal was to save enough money to fund his father’s eye treatment and improve his family’s financial condition.

On Monday morning, while carrying out delivery duties on his two-wheeler, Niyaz was among the victims when a speeding BEST electric bus rammed into multiple vehicles in Dadar. The accident claimed his life and left six others injured.

Family seeks answers

Niyaz’s uncle, Roz Ali, said the family is struggling to come to terms with the loss. Throughout the day, relatives wrestled with the difficult task of informing Niyaz’s parents about the tragedy before eventually breaking the news late in the evening.

According to Roz, Swiggy has arranged for Niyaz’s mortal remains to be transported to his hometown for the final rites.

A representative from Swiggy reportedly informed the family that a standard insurance compensation of Rs 10 lakh would be processed after hospital formalities are completed.

Questions over compensation

While support has begun arriving from the company, family members said they remain uncertain about additional compensation and assistance. They also expressed concerns over the lack of clarity regarding support from transport authorities following the fatal crash.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced daily by delivery workers and other gig economy employees who spend long hours navigating busy city roads to earn a livelihood.
