DS Balaji, a designer from Vizag, shared his disheartening experience of visiting Kolkata, describing it as the “most unhygienic” city he has encountered in India. During his two-day trip, Balaji visited Sealdah station and Burrabazaar, two of Kolkata’s busiest and most chaotic areas, where he was appalled by the unsanitary conditions.
In a post on X, Balaji detailed his observations, noting that the streets were overflowing with garbage, and open gutters emitted a foul smell of urine. He found it difficult to breathe due to the stench while witnessing locals enjoy breakfast from street vendors situated right next to the gutters. Balaji pointed out that vendors were even selling their goods atop these open drains, something he claimed he had never seen in other parts of India, regardless of the infrastructure challenges.
Reflecting on his experience, Balaji expressed disappointment in the city’s lack of attention to civic hygiene, saying it was “sad to see” such conditions in a major Indian city.
