Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Monday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks advising people to avoid buying jewellery for the next one year and reduce fuel consumption.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar questioned the reasons behind the increasing prices of fuel and gold and asked who should be held accountable for the rise.

‘People cannot stop buying gold’

“The Prime Minister, who has advised people not to buy gold and reduce fuel consumption, should also explain why the prices have risen and who is responsible for it,” Shivakumar said.

He further remarked that gold purchases are closely linked to Indian family traditions and social occasions, especially weddings.

“Can you ask people celebrating weddings not to buy gold?” he asked while reacting sharply to the Prime Minister’s advice.

References to COVID-19 remarks

Shivakumar also referred to Prime Minister Modi’s public appeals during the COVID-19 pandemic, including requests for citizens to light lamps and clap to show solidarity.

“He gives advice. During COVID-19, he asked people to light lamps and clap. Did that solve problems?” Shivakumar questioned.

The Deputy Chief Minister added that gold often acts as financial security for many families during difficult times.

“During hardship or happiness, people take loans against gold,” he said.

Political sparring over rising prices

The remarks come amid continued political debates over inflation, fuel prices, and rising gold rates across the country.

Opposition leaders have repeatedly accused the central government of failing to control price rise, while the BJP has defended its economic policies citing global market conditions and geopolitical challenges.

The comments have once again highlighted growing political tensions ahead of key electoral battles in several states.
