Doctors at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) successfully removed three pieces of razor blades from the stomach of a 16-year-old boy in a challenging medical procedure.
The teenager, identified as Mujebur Rehman, was brought to the hospital at around 2 am on Thursday after swallowing multiple razor blade pieces.
An X-ray revealed several radio-opaque objects inside his stomach. He was subsequently referred to the Medical Gastroenterology department for specialised treatment.
Endoscopy used to remove sharp objects
A team of doctors carried out a minimally invasive gastrointestinal endoscopy to retrieve the objects.
The procedure required considerable precision because of the sharp edges of the razor blade pieces. Doctors had to carefully manoeuvre the instruments to remove them while reducing the risk of injuries to the stomach and gastrointestinal tract.
The medical team successfully retrieved three sharp pieces from the teenager’s stomach.
Doctors highlight risks of internal injuries
Dr Ramesh Kumar said such procedures can be particularly challenging because sharp foreign objects can cause internal injuries, including lacerations and perforations.
Despite the risks involved, the procedure was completed successfully.
Hospital officials said the teenager’s recovery following the intervention was uneventful and that he was doing well.
Hospital team has experience in such cases
Senior health officials said the Medical Gastroenterology team at OGH has experience in performing endoscopic procedures to remove different types of foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract.
The successful intervention prevented the sharp objects from potentially causing further internal complications and allowed the teenager to recover without reported complications following the procedure
