In Salem district near Vazhapadi, a drunken man opened fire on his daughter-in-law and young grandson on Monday evening. The injured woman and child were admitted to Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital, where their condition is currently stable.
Police are actively searching for the suspect, identified as 55-year-old P Kuppusamy from Thengalpatti near Vazhapadi, who fled the scene after the shooting.
The incident occurred around 5 pm when Kuppusamy arrived home intoxicated and started arguing with his wife, Lakshmi. According to officials at Vazhapadi police station, the man suddenly assaulted Lakshmi with a wooden log during the dispute.
Witnessing the attack, his daughter-in-law, 25-year-old S Anitha, intervened by pushing Kuppusamy down in an effort to protect Lakshmi.
Enraged, Kuppusamy then fired a country-made firearm at Anitha and her two-year-old son before escaping.
Both victims sustained gunshot wounds and were initially taken to a private hospital in Vazhapadi. Subsequently, they were transferred to Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for specialized treatment.
Authorities have registered a case and revealed that the country gun used was intended for hunting purposes.
The police continue their efforts to apprehend Kuppusamy and bring him to justice.
