A disturbing act of violence unfolded in Woraiyur, Trichy, on Sunday, when a group of intoxicated youths attacked a local family with wooden logs and beer bottles after being confronted for drinking in a residential area.
The incident occurred on Panikkan Street, where five youths were reportedly renting a house near that of S Arun Kumar. On Sunday afternoon, the group was drinking openly outside their residence. When Senthil Kumar, Arun Kumar’s father-in-law, objected to their behaviour, the group became enraged and verbally abused him.
As tensions escalated, Arun Kumar intervened. The confrontation quickly turned violent, with the inebriated youths launching an assault using logs and bottles, injuring both Senthil Kumar and Arun Kumar. The attackers fled the scene soon after.
Both victims were rushed to the Trichy Government Hospital for medical treatment. That night, a complaint was filed at the Woraiyur police station by Arun Kumar, leading to a case being registered.
Police booked the suspects under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections:
-
296B – verbal abuse,
115(2) – voluntarily causing hurt,
118(1) – causing hurt using weapons,
351(3) – criminal intimidation.
On Monday, three of the accused — Naveen, Aathesh, and Madhan — were arrested, produced in court, and remanded to judicial custody. A manhunt is on for the remaining two suspects.
