A tragic double death has shaken a village in Barabanki district, where an ailing 88-year-old man died hours after witnessing his middle-aged son being brutally assaulted to death by relatives over a long-standing property dispute, police said.
Violence over decades-old land dispute
The incident occurred in Ramnagar area of Barabanki on Saturday evening but came to light on Monday. The deceased have been identified as Ramnath (88) and his son Chetram (45). Police said the dispute dates back nearly 25 years, involving a piece of land allotted for residential purposes to two villagers.
While houses were built on a portion of the land, another part remained vacant, leading to repeated clashes between the two families over ownership and usage rights.
Assault witnessed by elderly father
According to police, tension escalated on Saturday when members of one faction allegedly began ploughing the disputed land, prompting objections from the rival side. During the heated argument, Chetram rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion.
He was allegedly attacked with sticks by his maternal cousins — Vinod, Gajodhar, Vishal and Narendra — in full view of his elderly father. Chetram suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the district hospital before being referred to King George’s Medical University.
Shock claims second life
Ramnath, who was already unwell, reportedly suffered severe shock after witnessing the brutal assault on his son. He died later the same night. Chetram succumbed to his injuries during treatment at KGMU on Sunday morning.
Arrests made, police deployed
Police have registered a murder case against four accused and arrested three of them. Officials said additional police force has been deployed in the village to prevent any further unrest and to maintain law and order.
