An 11-year-old girl, Tanushree, died after allegedly suffering an electric shock at a government school in Kurukunda village under Sindhanur taluk on Friday, police said.
Tanushree was a Class 5 student at the Government Lower Primary School in the village. The tragic incident occurred during the midday meal break when she reportedly went to drink water on the school premises.
Suspected contact with live wire near water unit
According to preliminary police findings, the student is suspected to have come into contact with a live electric wire connected to a water purification unit installed at the school. She reportedly collapsed immediately after receiving the shock.
School staff and locals rushed her for medical treatment, but doctors declared her dead. Officials said further technical inspection of the electrical system will be carried out to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Protests erupt, negligence allegations surface
Following the incident, local residents staged protests, alleging negligence by school authorities. Protesters demanded strict action against those responsible, including questions raised about the role of the headmaster and the School Development and Monitoring Committee.
Police have registered a case at the Sindhanur Rural Police Station. Officials said statements from school authorities, staff and witnesses will be recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about electrical safety and maintenance standards in public institutions, especially in schools catering to young children.
Authorities are expected to submit a detailed report after technical and forensic examinations are completed.
