As Class 12 board examinations commenced in Chhattisgarh, authorities are investigating a series of student deaths reported across districts, raising concerns about academic stress and mental well-being.
Police confirmed that four students preparing for examinations died in separate incidents over two days in Korba and Janjgir-Champa districts. Three cases were reported from Korba, while one occurred in Janjgir-Champa.
Investigation into stress factors
Among those who died were three boys and one girl. A note was recovered in one case, though it did not clearly mention a reason. Police officials stated that investigations are focusing on possible academic pressure, family circumstances and personal challenges.
Korba city Superintendent of Police Prateek Chaturvedi said inquiries include reviewing digital activity, family statements and other relevant factors. Post-mortem examinations have been completed.
In one case, a Class 12 commerce student reportedly did not attend a physical education examination on Thursday. In another, a Class 10 student had been preparing for board examinations. A separate case involved a Class 9 student, whose studies were reportedly affected by her mother’s illness.
Accident adds to grief
In Surguja district, a Class 12 student died in a road accident while travelling with a friend to appear for the examination. Police said their motorcycle lost control and collided with another vehicle barely 10 minutes before they were due to reach the centre.
Authorities have urged parents and schools to remain attentive to signs of emotional distress during examination periods and to encourage open dialogue and timely support.
