Auraiya: A man has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district for allegedly attempting to murder his 14-year-old daughter after targeting her over her transgender characteristics. Police said the accused assaulted the minor, threw her into a canal and fled the scene, believing she would not survive.

The victim, a resident of the Kotwali Shivli area in Kanpur Dehat district, was rescued by local residents after managing to reach the bank of the canal despite sustaining serious injuries.

The accused was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently in police custody.

Girl survives after being thrown into canal

Auraiya police said the incident occurred on Wednesday when the father allegedly took his daughter on a scooter, claiming he would drop her at her aunt’s residence in Bidhuna.

According to the victim’s statement, the accused stopped the vehicle on a stretch of road between Baderahar and Bunchpur villages.

Police said he allegedly began verbally abusing the girl using derogatory remarks related to her gender identity before repeatedly assaulting her with a stick.

After the assault, the father allegedly threw the injured minor into the Patna canal and fled the scene.

The girl survived because the water level in the canal was reportedly low, allowing her to drift towards the bank and seek help.

Locals alert police

Residents who noticed the injured girl and heard her cries immediately alerted the police.

Officials from Bela police station and the Purwa Sujan outpost rushed to the location and arranged for her transportation to a Community Health Centre (CHC).

Medical staff provided emergency treatment before referring her to a higher medical facility due to the seriousness of her injuries.

The timely intervention of local residents and police personnel is believed to have saved the girl’s life.

Victim suffered multiple injuries

Doctors said the minor sustained severe injuries during the attack.

According to medical officials, she suffered trauma to her right eye along with multiple injuries across various parts of her body.

Given her condition, she was shifted to a specialised hospital for advanced treatment and monitoring.

Authorities said her medical care remains a priority as investigations continue.

Father arrested after police raid

Following the complaint and preliminary investigation, police conducted a raid and detained the accused.

During questioning, the father allegedly admitted to assaulting the girl and throwing her into the canal.

According to police sources, he claimed he was angered by what he described as her transgender behaviour and alleged that she was influencing her younger sibling.

Investigators are examining all aspects of the case and gathering additional evidence.

Gender-based violence raises concern

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges and discrimination faced by transgender and gender-diverse individuals, particularly minors.

Child rights advocates have repeatedly stressed the importance of protecting children from violence, abuse and discrimination based on gender identity or expression.

Experts note that family support plays a critical role in the well-being and safety of transgender youth, while rejection and abuse can have severe physical and psychological consequences.

The case has also renewed calls for greater awareness and sensitisation regarding gender diversity and child protection.

Investigation underway

Police officials said further investigation is in progress and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.

Authorities are also coordinating with medical personnel to monitor the victim’s condition and record additional statements when required.

The accused remains in custody as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Conclusion

The arrest of a father accused of attempting to kill his transgender minor daughter has shocked the local community and highlighted concerns about gender-based discrimination and violence within families. With the victim receiving treatment and police continuing their investigation, the case underscores the need for stronger protection and support systems for vulnerable children.
