Hailakandi: An eight-month-old girl was found dead in a pond on her family’s premises in Assam’s Hailakandi district, following which police arrested her father as investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.

Baby found missing from home

The infant, identified as Minakshi Das, was found floating in a pond on the family’s property after her mother noticed that she was missing in the morning.

According to the mother’s statement to police, the baby had been sleeping beside her when she last saw her. Her husband had reportedly gone to the washroom at the time. After the child was found missing, family members began searching the premises before her body was discovered in the pond.

Neighbours alerted police, who recovered the body and sent it to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi for an autopsy.

Police investigate how tragedy happened

The circumstances in which the infant reached the pond remain unclear. Initial reports had raised the possibility of an accidental drowning, but police have been investigating whether there was any foul play.

The father’s subsequent arrest has added a new dimension to the investigation. Police are awaiting the autopsy findings and other evidence before establishing the circumstances and responsibility for the child’s death. The available reports do not establish a motive or conclusively determine how the infant entered the pond.

The tragedy has left the family and residents of the area in shock, while the investigation continues to establish what happened to the eight-month-old child.
