Mumbai: A fire broke out on the ground floor of a four-storey residential building in Kurla West on Wednesday afternoon following a gas pipeline leakage, civic officials confirmed. The incident, which occurred around 1.20 pm at the Mubarak building located behind LIG Colony in Vinoba Bhave Nagar, triggered a swift emergency response but fortunately caused no injuries.
Blaze triggered by gas leak on ground floor
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire began after gas leaked from a pipeline servicing the cluster of commercial units on the ground floor. Several shopowners and residents alerted the authorities soon after flames were noticed spreading through the affected section.
The fire primarily damaged four to five shops, while the upper residential floors remained unaffected. Residents were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.
Multiple firefighting units deployed
At least four fire engines along with additional firefighting vehicles were rushed to the site. Personnel from Mahangar Gas Limited were also deployed to assess and shut off the gas supply to prevent further leakage or ignition. The 108 ambulance service and officials from the local ward office were stationed nearby for emergency support.
A civic official stated that the fire was “almost extinguished” shortly after teams began their operations. Cooling procedures continued to ensure that no hotspots remained within the commercial units.
Rapid response prevented major damage
Authorities noted that prompt action from both residents and emergency teams helped prevent the fire from spreading to the upper floors or causing casualties. The cause of the pipeline leakage is under examination, and officials are expected to conduct a safety audit of the surrounding gas network.
Incidents involving gas leaks and minor fires are not uncommon in densely populated neighbourhoods like Kurla West, where mixed-use buildings often house shops on the ground floor and residential units above. Civic officials have once again urged residents and shopowners to regularly check for gas odour, leakages and faults in connecting pipes.
Conclusion
The Kurla West fire, though alarming, ended without casualties thanks to quick reporting and timely intervention by firefighting and gas utility teams. With the blaze now under control and investigations underway, authorities aim to prevent similar occurrences by reinforcing safety measures across the locality.
