Delhi-based entrepreneur Gaurav Kawatra has gone viral on LinkedIn after sharing how being abruptly fired from a high-paying corporate role in 2018 eventually changed his life and career path.

Kawatra revealed that he was working as a director at a Chinese multinational company earning nearly Rs 5 lakh per month when he received a termination letter with just a three-day notice period and no severance package.

At the time, he was also managing a home loan of almost Rs 2 crore.

‘I thought I was buried’

In his emotional post, Kawatra described the months following his dismissal as one of the darkest phases of his life. He recalled facing financial stress, panic attacks, insomnia, and repeated rejection while searching for work opportunities.

“108 cold calls. 108 rejections. 3 AM panic attacks,” he wrote, adding that he smoked heavily and struggled emotionally during the transition.

The entrepreneur also reflected on the social pressure and shame associated with sudden unemployment, especially after holding a senior corporate position.

Layoff became turning point

Despite the hardship, Kawatra now describes the termination as the “greatest blessing” of his life. He said losing the job forced him to stop depending entirely on corporate titles and instead focus on building practical long-term skills.

According to him, the experience pushed him to learn sales, marketing, and people management — skills he now considers more valuable than academic qualifications alone.

“Degrees expire. Skills compound forever,” he wrote in the viral post.

Advice for professionals facing layoffs

Kawatra also urged professionals facing layoffs not to let shame destroy their mental or physical health. He encouraged people to speak openly with family members and seek emotional support during difficult periods.

His post has resonated strongly online, with many users discussing corporate job insecurity, financial pressure caused by large EMIs, and the importance of upskilling in today’s rapidly changing economy.

From corporate employee to entrepreneur

Since leaving the corporate world, Kawatra says he has rebuilt his career through entrepreneurship and consulting work. According to his post, he has advised projects worth over Rs 6,500 crore across 19 Indian states.

His story has become part of a wider online conversation about layoffs, career reinvention, mental health, and the uncertain nature of corporate stability in modern workplaces.
