The death of five donkeys near Raigad Fort has sparked outrage after their carcasses were reportedly dumped near Konzhar ghat, around six kilometres from the historic fort.

Locals and activists have demanded strict action, alleging cruelty and negligence in the use of animals for transporting construction materials uphill.

Used for heavy transport work

Reports say around 100 donkeys are being used by contractors to carry stones, boulders, lime, toilet fittings and other materials along the steep trekking route to the fort.

Several contractors engaged in works around the fort have reportedly relied on the animals for the past four to five years.

Rising heat and poor care alleged

Residents and activists alleged that the donkeys were being overworked in extreme summer temperatures without adequate food, water or veterinary care.

Some reports claimed that 20 to 30 donkeys may have died over the past five years.

The foul odour from dumped carcasses also caused distress among nearby residents.

Officials seek inquiry

The local animal husbandry department said it had not received prior information about the deaths and would conduct an inspection.

Concerns have also been raised over why alternative transport systems such as ropeway services were not fully used.

Calls for accountability

Animal welfare supporters say the incident highlights the need for stronger monitoring of working animals in tourism and construction zones.

Many demanded that those responsible be identified and punished, while ensuring humane treatment for the remaining animals.
