A five-year-old boy from Annai Sathya Nagar in Erode died on Wednesday after he accidentally choked on a banana while playing at his grandmother’s home. The deceased child has been identified as Saicharan, son of Manickam and Muthulakshmi, both labourers.
According to the Karungalpalayam police, Saicharan and his three-year-old sister had been left in the care of their grandmother on Wednesday morning while their parents went to work. Police said the boy had been playing before peeling and eating a banana he had carried from home.
Choking incident occurred suddenly
Investigating officers said the banana became lodged in the child’s windpipe, cutting off airflow.
“Saicharan was playing. Later, he peeled and ate a banana he had brought from home. The banana entered his windpipe and got stuck there,” an officer from Karungalpalayam police station said.
As the child began to choke, his grandmother and neighbours immediately rushed him to the Erode Government Hospital. Doctors examined him upon arrival but declared him dead on arrival, noting that the blockage had caused fatal suffocation.
Police register case, emphasise safety
The Karungalpalayam police have registered a case and have begun routine inquiries into the incident. Officers said the case appears to be an accidental choking with no foul play suspected.
Local health workers emphasised the importance of supervising young children while they eat and educating families on basic choking first aid, including identifying signs of distress and knowing when to seek emergency medical help.
Community mourns tragic loss
Neighbours described Saicharan as cheerful and active, and said the family is devastated by the sudden loss. Community members have offered support to the grieving family as police complete their inquiries.
