Four minor girls from a Mahadalit hamlet in Bihar’s Aurangabad district allegedly died after consuming poison together in an agricultural field, while a fifth girl survived and is undergoing treatment, police said. The incident, which occurred on January 29, came to light days later and has triggered serious concerns over social pressure, delayed reporting and possible attempts to conceal evidence.
Scolding over talking to boys cited as trigger
According to police, the lone survivor told investigators that she and four of her friends consumed poison after being scolded by their family members for talking to a group of boys. The girls belonged to a hamlet with around 25 Mahadalit households.
Police officials said the emotional distress following the reprimand may have led to the extreme step, though they stressed that all aspects of the case are being examined.
Bodies cremated before police arrival
Inspector General of Magadh range Kshatranil Singh said that when police reached the village, they were informed by a chowkidar that all four girls had already been cremated. Locals, mostly women and children, refused to speak to officials.
“Only one partially burnt pyre was found. Ideally, four separate pyres should have been present. This has raised several unanswered questions,” Singh said.
Village found deserted
Police found the houses of the four deceased girls locked, while the family of the surviving girl had reportedly fled the village. Another officer said the village appeared completely deserted, with residents unwilling to cooperate or share information about the cremations.
FIR registered, probe underway
Aurangabad Superintendent of Police Ambrish Rahul confirmed that an FIR has been registered at Haspura police station against unknown persons based on the chowkidar’s statement.
“The investigation is focusing on what led to the incident, how the poison was procured and who was present during the cremations. The survivor’s statement will be crucial,” the SP said, adding that a detailed inquiry has been ordered.
