What may appear as a strict immigration measure for Trump has turned into a distressing ordeal for migrant families and students who came to US chasing aspirations. Many now live in fear, as immigration enforcement agencies like ICE randomly detain and threaten individuals with deportation. This escalating situation has deeply shaken immigrant communities.

A recent incident has amplified concerns—an Indian-American social activist, Kunal Jain, posted on X (formerly Twitter) about witnessing an Indian student being detained at Newark Airport. The student, visibly distraught and restrained in handcuffs, was reportedly deported. Jain, who recently returned to India and authors Hindi books, shared the video along with an emotional note, tagging the Indian embassy and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. He lamented the treatment, calling it heartbreaking and inhumane.

The clip rapidly gained traction online, sparking intense discussions. Some users criticized Jain for documenting the event instead of intervening. Others questioned why Indian students continue to pursue education in the U.S. despite rising costs and increasing risks. A few viewed deportation as a blessing in disguise, citing India’s growing global status. Yet many condemned the public handling of the student, deeming it humiliating regardless of his immigration status.

The episode has reignited debates about racial bias, policy harshness, and the true cost of the American Dream for international students, especially those from India. With safety concerns and legal uncertainty rising, many now urge a reassessment of overseas education choices.
