In a tragic accident, a 13-year-old girl died after accidentally strangling herself with her mother’s saree while playing at her home in Devilal Colony, Sector 9.

Police said the girl was a Class VII student and lived with her parents and two younger sisters in rented accommodation.

Saree tied to window grill

According to investigators, the incident took place between 5 pm and 5.30 pm on Sunday while the girl was playing with her sisters.

Police said she had tied her mother’s saree to a window grill and was spinning while seated.

During the play, the saree reportedly slipped, wrapped around her neck and tightened as she continued spinning.

Parents found her unconscious

Officials said the younger sisters did not immediately realise what had happened.

The parents, who were at home, became concerned when the children suddenly fell silent and found the girl unconscious with the saree around her neck.

She was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Police call it accidental death

Gurugram Police said preliminary inquiry found no foul play.

Proceedings were initiated under relevant legal provisions, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination.

Safety reminder for families

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of improvised play setups involving ropes, cloth and household items.

Child safety experts advise supervision during indoor play, especially when objects can pose strangulation risks.
