New Delhi: Google is taking another significant step in its transformation of Search, using artificial intelligence to provide users with more detailed weather information instead of simply directing them to a list of websites.
The development follows the launch of WeatherNext 3, Google’s latest global AI weather forecasting model. The technology is being integrated into Google Search, Gemini and Maps, among other services, as the company increasingly turns Search into a platform designed not just to find information but to help people make decisions.
WeatherNext 3 can generate forecasts at higher resolution and update them hourly. Google says its precipitation forecasts can be up to 50% more accurate than those produced by its previous model, WeatherNext 2.
The change illustrates a broader transformation underway at Google, where the traditional model of displaying a page of ranked links is increasingly being supplemented — and in some situations replaced — by AI-generated answers and interactive experiences.
Weather becomes more than a simple search result
Weather information is one of the clearest examples of a search query where users are generally looking for an answer rather than a collection of websites.
Someone checking the weather before travelling, planning an outdoor event or deciding whether to carry an umbrella typically wants to know whether it will rain, how temperatures will change and what conditions are expected during a particular period.
Google’s new AI weather capabilities are designed around that type of decision-making.
WeatherNext 3 provides hourly forecasts and more detailed local information, while incorporating real-time satellite data and other observations. The model is intended to provide more frequent and granular predictions than earlier versions.
This means that instead of searching for a weather website and then interpreting the information, users can increasingly receive a forecast directly within Google’s ecosystem.
The end of the ‘ten blue links’
The development is part of a much larger shift in how Google Search works.
For decades, Google’s search experience was largely defined by a list of ranked webpages — commonly described as the “ten blue links”. Users entered a query, received links and then visited individual websites to find the information they needed.
That model is now changing rapidly.
Google has introduced AI Overviews and AI Mode, allowing users to ask more complex questions and receive AI-generated responses with links to supporting information. Google describes AI Mode as an experience where users can ask questions, explore topics through follow-up queries and receive information organised by AI.
Google’s transformation became even more apparent in May 2026, when the company announced a major overhaul of Search at its annual developer conference. The new approach is designed to make Search more interactive and capable of helping users complete tasks rather than simply directing them towards websites.
The new weather experience fits neatly into this strategy.
From finding information to making decisions
The significance of WeatherNext 3 is therefore not limited to weather forecasting.
Google’s broader objective is to make its services more useful at the moment a person needs to make a decision.
Weather information is particularly suitable for this approach because it can influence everyday choices. A person may want to know whether to carry an umbrella, postpone a journey, change travel plans or schedule an outdoor activity.

AI forecasting gets more detailed
WeatherNext 3 represents a major technical upgrade over earlier AI forecasting systems.
The model can update predictions every hour and provide forecasts at spatial resolutions of up to five kilometres. By comparison, earlier versions operated with less frequent updates and coarser geographic resolution.
More frequent updates can be especially useful for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Rainfall, thunderstorms and other weather events can develop quickly, meaning that a forecast several hours old may not provide the most useful picture of what is happening locally.
Google’s system combines AI-based prediction with satellite information and other observational data to improve the level of detail available to users.
However, AI forecasting does not completely replace conventional meteorology. Modern weather prediction still relies heavily on observations, physics-based modelling and established forecasting systems, with AI increasingly being used to improve and accelerate parts of the process.
What this means for websites and publishers
Google’s AI-driven Search strategy could also have major consequences for websites that have traditionally depended on search traffic.
If users receive useful answers directly within Google Search, they may have less reason to click through to individual websites.
That has already become a major concern among publishers as AI Overviews and AI Mode expand.

Nevertheless, the changing search experience could alter the economics of online publishing. A website may continue to appear in Google’s results while receiving fewer visits if users obtain sufficient information without leaving Search.

India is already part of Google’s AI Search expansion
The shift is particularly relevant to Indian users because Google has already expanded AI-powered Search features in India.
Google introduced AI Mode in India in 2025, allowing users to ask complex questions and receive AI-generated responses with links and opportunities for follow-up queries.
The continued development of AI-powered weather information means Indian users are likely to experience more of this decision-focused approach within familiar Google products.
