New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the ban on pornography took a curious turn yesterday, when in the Supreme Court, which is hearing the case, Attorney general Mukul Rohatgi told a bench headed by chief justice HL Dattu that the government is committed to block websites of child pornography but said that adult pornography sites can’t be banned in the country.
Rohatgi said that the Centre can’t turn to moral policing for the citizens and the government can’t regulate what people are doing in their bedroom. He said the Government preferred self regulation, and that the state could not be totalitarian.
Earlier last week, the Centre said that Supreme Court’s repeated criticism of the ministry of home affairs for “inaction” on the list of websites with child pornographic content provided by petitioner Kamlesh Vaswani was the principal trigger for the blocking of 857 websites.
The law officer told that the ministry would soon file an affidavit in the Supreme Court explaining its action taken on the issue raised by the petition even as she emphasized only those adult websites which had child pornographic content were blocked
