A Class 10 student at a private school in Greater Noida West died by suicide on December 23, allegedly hours after being reprimanded by teachers for using artificial intelligence (AI) on her mobile phone during a pre-board examination. The girl’s father has submitted a police complaint seeking registration of an FIR against the school, accusing its staff of abetment to suicide.

According to the complaint, the 16-year-old student allegedly jumped from her eighth-floor apartment early on December 23. Her father claimed she was deeply distressed after being scolded and humiliated by teachers a day earlier for carrying her phone into the examination hall.

Allegations made by the family

The father told police that his daughter had “unknowingly” carried her mobile phone to school on December 22. During the examination, the invigilator allegedly found the device and suspected that AI tools were used to write answers. The phone was confiscated and the matter escalated to the class teacher and principal.

He alleged that even after he arrived at the school, teachers and the principal continued to reprimand his daughter aggressively, causing severe emotional distress. In his complaint, he named the class teacher, another teacher, and the school management, urging police to book them under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment to suicide.

The father also said the incident has traumatised his other two daughters, who study at the same school and are now fearful of returning.

School denies harassment claim

The school has strongly denied the allegations. The principal told media that the student was not harassed and that the school followed procedures laid down by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

She said the student was informed about the serious consequences of cheating in board examinations, including a possible five-year ban, which is part of CBSE rules. According to the principal, the parents were informed immediately and reached the school within 10–15 minutes, and the interaction was brief and conducted at the reception area.

Police examining complaint

Police officials said they are verifying the allegations and circumstances surrounding the incident before registering an FIR. The case has also sparked renewed debate on academic pressure, student mental health, and the handling of technology-related violations in schools.
