Tension gripped Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir as locals reported a sudden exchange of gunfire across the border, marking a rare ceasefire violation by Pakistan after nearly eight years.
“Three to four shots were heard around 8:30 to 9 PM last night. We were in the middle of work when an urgent call came instructing us to halt everything and return home,” recounted Raju Singh, a resident of the border town. “After that, things remained quiet.”
Ankur Singh, another local, described the scene as more intense. “Around 10 to 12 rounds were exchanged. The Indian Army promptly responded. It’s been years since something like this happened, but we’re used to such flare-ups. We’re all staying alert now,” he said.
The gunfire, which came without prior provocation, has once again stirred memories of past tensions in the sensitive region. Though no injuries or major damage have been reported, the sudden breach has left villagers on edge.
India and Pakistan had agreed to a renewed ceasefire understanding in February 2021, after years of intermittent violations. However, last night’s incident marks a serious departure from that fragile peace.
Security forces are now closely monitoring the situation as residents brace for potential escalations, even as calm has temporarily returned.
