Haryana reduced water supply after Atishi went on hunger strike

Atishi (1)

AAP leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the BJP-led government in Haryana of further reducing water supply despite Delhi minister Atishi’s ongoing indefinite hunger strike demanding Delhi’s rightful share of water from Haryana.

Bharadwaj asserted that the Haryana government, under BJP’s leadership, has been consistently deceptive, alleging, “They continue to decrease water supply… Following Atishi’s protest, Haryana has cut an additional 17 MGD (million gallons per day), resulting in a total reduction of 117 MGD,” as reported by ANI.

Taking a swipe at the BJP, Bharadwaj criticized, “Despite advocating ‘one nation, one election, one team,’ the BJP government in Haryana is depriving the national capital of its water.”

Meanwhile, Atishi’s hunger strike, now in its third day at Delhi’s Bhogal near Jangpura, highlights the severe water crisis faced by Delhi, which relies entirely on neighboring states for its water supply.

According to Atishi, Delhi requires 1,005 MGD (million gallons per day) of water, out of which 613 MGD traditionally comes from Haryana. However, over the past three weeks, Haryana has purportedly reduced this supply, providing only 513 MGD. Atishi emphasized that a reduction of 1 MGD can impact 28,500 people, potentially affecting up to 28 lakh individuals due to the shortfall.

She further alleged that while HathniKund Barrage holds ample water, the gate controlling Delhi’s water release has been closed, preventing water from reaching the capital.

In the wake of the water crisis, residents across Delhi, including those in Mayur Vihar’s Chilla Gaon and Geeta Colony, continue to endure long waits at water tankers to fulfill their daily water needs.
