Former MLA and president of the Haryana Indian National Lok Dal, Nafe Singh Rathi, was shot and killed this evening in the Jhajjar district by unknown gunmen who ambushed the SUV he was driving past. Along with him, two other people have also passed away and two more are in critical condition.

The men arrived in a car and started firing while Rathi and his companions were inside. Following the attack, the attackers left the area.

The former MLA was pronounced dead upon arrival at the nearby Brahm Shakti Sanjivani Hospital, where the injured were hurriedly taken for medical attention.

Rakesh Sihag, the head of the INLD’s media cell, confirmed Nafe Singh Rathi’s death in the shootout.

Nafe Singh Rathi served as an MLA of the INLD from Bahadurgarh where the attack took place. The state police is on alert after the shocking attack. Several teams have been swiftly mobilised to the scene of the crime and are collecting evidence to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the attack. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from various locations in the vicinity to determine the route of the attacker’s arrival and their subsequent escape route.

The attack is suspected to have been carried out by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his close associate Kala Jathedi. Preliminary investigations indicate that a property dispute led to the attack.

With two terms as a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly, Nafe Singh Rathi has a well-known political history. In addition, he served as the Haryana Former Legislators Association’s state president. Rathi has a history of involvement in politics and ran for the Lok Sabha in the Rohtak constituency.

Additionally, he presided over the Bahadurgarh Municipal Council twice.

When Jagdish Rathi, the son of former Haryana minister Mange Ram Rathi, committed suicide last year and Nafe Singh Rathi was accused of aiding and abetting, the case made national news. After that, Rathi and his nephew Sonu were accused of being harassed in relation to the suicide case. The High Court granted Rathi anticipatory bail on January 24, 2023.
