Chandigarh: Six school children were killed and around 20 others suffered injuries after the school bus, which was heading to drop the students to their homes, met with an accident in Kanina town in Mahendragarh, Haryana on Thursday.
The bus, which was cruising at great speed, overturned while overtaking another vehicle, according to sources. Superintendent of Police Arsh Verma confirmed to news agencies that the bus driver has been arrested, and a medical examination is being conducted to determine whether he was in an inebriated condition while he was behind the wheel.
A doctor at Nihal Hospital in Mahendragarh informed that 20 students were brought to the hospital, of which four were dead. One of the seriously injured students was put on a ventilator, but he passed away after 10 minutes of initiating treatment.
The doctor, however, said that they saved 15 students who suffered serious injuries. They were later referred to a government hospital after providing them with first aid.
Sources said that the driver was driving the vehicle rashly. A student who suffered injuries claimed that the driver was drunk and was speeding at 120 kmph, which led to the imbalance of the vehicle.
Seema Trikha, Haryana’s Education Minister, left for Mahendragarh. The bus, which was transporting students from GRL School to their homes, overturned while attempting to overtake another vehicle. It is said that the bus was carrying approximately 35 to 40 students ranging from Class 4 to Class 10.
